Confederate Third Type Richmond Musket, with bayonet and original butternut sling, NVSN, .58 cal., 40'' three-banded barrel, 1861 type rear sight, correct high hammer, sideplate dated 1862 and marked ''C.S./Richmond, VA'', with correct high-arch 1855 style hammer, and U.S. marked steel buttplate. Top of barrel dated 1864. Stock with clear ''Allin'' cartouches. Condition is very good to near fine. Barrel appears to have been lightly burnished at one point, with scattered moderate pitting near percussion nipple. Stock appears original with no extra sanding. Toning to triggerguard and buttplate with clean smooth bore. Hammer does not stay at full cock. Ramrod is present. Pre-Civil War U.S. marked bayonet with moderate carbon spotting; scabbard is excellent with just slight scuffs to exterior finish. Sling remains in good condition with separation of leather strap that could be repaired or left alone as it detracts little; minor fraying near leather keeper. A fine example of a Confederate common musket from the late Civil War period. Est.: $4,000-$6,000. (Antique)
