Unsigned manuscript telegram from Jefferson Davis to General P. G. T. Beauregard, two pages, 7.75 x 4, sent from the Southern Telegraph Company in Richmond, no date. In part: “[Genl Hood] sent two dispatches on the eighth 8th inst the first identical with that communicated by you the second withdraw the first & expressed the opinion it would be best for [Genl Cheatham] to remain in his position for the present.” Both names of the generals were written in code and subsequently decoded in pencil. Second page is professionally inlaid into a slightly larger off-white sheet. In overall fine condition. A fascinating example of ciphers used during the Civil War.
