Dr. Kinsman Clinton Divine, born Jefferson County Mississippi, Sept. 27, 1833. Educated at Madison College in Sharon, Miss. and University of New York where he earned his doctorate. Acted as house surgeon at Kings County hospital in Flatbush, New York, he then returned to Sharon, Miss. to begin private practice. At the start of the war, he entered the Confederate service in May 1861, first assigned to the 18th Regiment and served at the battles of Manasas and Leesburg, VA. He also served at Pensacola, Florida; Mobile, Alabama; and Corinth, Mississippi. At the Battle at Perrysville, KY he was left in charge of all the army surgeons in that state. He was then ordered to Louisville KY, Memphis TN, and finally to Tullahoma TN, where he served on General Walthall's staff. After the war he resumed private practice. he was a member of the Georgia Medical Association and was also a Knight of Honor with the Knights Templar. Dr Divine's father was a soldier in the Seminole Wars and his grandfather was a Revolutionary War soldier. In the end, Divine suddenly passed away while performing surgery on a patient. Includes Dr. Kinsman Divine's Charriere Paris marked surgical field kit, in original beautiful wood case, brass handle top is engraved "Dr. K. C. Divine, Sept 1st, 1856." Surgical tools are marked Charriere Paris, does have some missing. Wood case measures 3.5" x 6.75" x 13.25". Also presented in a wooden case, is his field medicinal kit, some of the glass bottles show hand-written original paper labels, glass pestle and mortar, and scale. The wood case for the medicinal kit shows blood splatter on the outside, case measures 9" x 9" x 10". Original portrait oil painting of Kinsman (24" x 29"), gold-painted oval frame measures approx. 34" x 39".
