War-dated ALS signed “E. Steuderman,” one page, 8.5 x 10.75, April 1, 1864. Letter to D. W. Spence in Atlanta. In part: “I send a (Boy Freeman) one of the best Negroes that I have. The woman, Masiah, that I sold he claimed as a wife, but told Freeman that I should sell her if she does not do better…He does not want to stay here as he thinks by being sold he can get with Masiah. If the man that brings Masiah will pay the price for her that such a Negro is worth sell her to the man. As Freeman is a Negro, what is a Negro. I want the highest price that Negros who are not Michenicks bring. And if he cannot be sold for a big price, have him hired out.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds.
