Handwritten manuscript, one page, 8 x 10, no date but circa 1862. A handwritten copy of a New York Times article entitled, “Death of Lieut. Harry B. Hidden, of the Lincoln Cavalry.” In part: “In anticipation of the advance of our forces upon Centerville and Manasas, Lieut. Hideen was ordered upon a re-cognizance. After several days of scouting…he fell in with the pickets of the enemy, a score in number, and drove them in till finally he was suddenly surrounded by a hundred and fifty of the enemy. The alternative was to cut his way out, or surrender at discretion. ‘Will you follow me?’ said the unshrinking officer. ‘To the death!’ was the unanimous reply; and through the rebel ranks they made their way…After this daring action…one of the skulking assassins who had laid down his arms, seized his musket and shot the retiring officer dead on the spot.” Intersecting folds, creases, and the writing light but legible, otherwise fine condition. Hill was killed on March 9, 1862, at Sangster's Station.
