Confederate Morse Carbine, #103, .50 cal., 20'' round barrel, brass frame and mountings, walnut buttstock and forend, with original cleaning rod present. This Breechloader Carbine was invented by George W. Morse and was mfg'd on machinery which had been captured by the Confederates at Harper's Ferry. Total mfg'd estimated at approx. 1000. Production of the Morse Carbine was mainly for State Militia of South Carolina. Specimens were also used to some extent by other Confederate forces. This particular example appears to be an early 2nd type. Condition is good, however some internal parts may be missing. Hammer does not remain in the cocked position. Barrel shows scuffs, scratching and discoloration. Thin original stock shows scuffs and dings, and period repair which may be a method of production at the toe area. Bore shows definite traces of rifling. An outwardly looking cosmetically pleasing example of a very difficult to obtain Confederate Carbine. Est.: $8!
