ALS signed “Dolly,” one page, 4 x 6, Huger Barracks, Norfolk, Virginia, February 17, 1862. Letter from Confederate soldier Adolphus J. Mann to his cousin. In part (spelling retained): “I was called off so unexpectedly that I scarcely had time to do any thing at all…It went right hard to part with my old friends but it was no go, I had to come to my Country's call, but at the same time I don't see any necessity of my coming back before the experation of my furlough I don't think there is any probibility of our being removed from Norfolk at least at the present time. We have whiped the Yankees back and retaken Elizabeth City (so miss rumor has it). We have gained another glorious victory in Tennessee. Killed some fifteen hundred Yankees. The old Merrimac is out at last. She lay under the sheaves at the Navy Yard yesterday and they were buisy putting on her guns so she will be ready for action in a day or so, so someboddy may expect to get hurt soon.” In fine condition, with an edge chip to the second page.
