Confederate Imprint SOUTHERN SENTIMENTS
Confederate Imprint of a poem entitled "SOUTHERN SENTIMENTS", 1p., 3.5" x 5.5", dated "Baltimore, Oct. 6th, 1861" in type at bottom. Four provocative verses, rallying Southerners to repel "The Northern hordes". In part: "Each Southron for his rights will die, / By honor onward steered. / We're anxious, waiting, ready, / Prepared in purse and mind; / To free the South of all her foes, And leave not one behind. / Amalgamation is the cry, / Which nerves these Hessians on; / For Nigger brides they all will die, We treat their boasts with scorn. / For sainted Beecher, Greeley, Stowe, / Now raise on high their wail; / They know that they have caused this woe, / And feel that they must fail..." Baltimore became one of the first casualties of the Civil War, and would remain on the front lines through much of the war. Although remaining under Union control, secessionist sentiments would remain strong. Despite the quelled riots that occurred in April 1861, feelings regarding loyalties remained unchanged, as evidenced by this imprint. Trimmed at top, with a small chip just beneath title, otherwise very good.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
