Confederate General Leonidas Polk Secretarial Copy of a war-dated order. One page, 5” x 8.75”, Columbus, Kentucky, February 28, 1862, to Brigadier Ruggles, Corinth, Mississippi. The document reads: “Your requisition for cartridges and Cannon powder received. Since its date I have sent to you and to Granada and to other points large quantities of cartridges and Cannon powder. Do you still wish the requisition. Please answer.” Leonidas Polk, a third cousin of President James Polk and an Episcopal bishop which earned him the moniker “The Fighting Bishop”. He committed one of the great mistakes of the Civil War by sending troops to occupy Columbus, Kentucky, in September 1861. The Commonwealth of Kentucky had declared its neutrality, but Polk's action ended that neutrality and the state quickly fell under Union control. Polk was later killed during the battle of Pine Mountain in 1864. The endorsements on the verso have bled through and affected portions of the text on the recto and there are the usual fold creases, else very good. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
