<B>Confederate General Howell Cobb Free Franked Envelope</B></I> signed in the upper right corner and postmarked Washington City D.C. 5.5" x 3.25", addressed to his wife "<I>Mrs. Howell Cobb Athens Ga</B></I>". There is a pencil notation on the back "1846". At this time Cobb was in his second term as a congressman from Georgia. He would later serve as James Buchanan's secretary of the treasury from 1857 until his resignation in 1869 to become a leader in the secessionist movement. During the Civil War, he rose to the rank of major general before surrendering at Macon, Georgia on April 20, 1864. Very good condition with staining and toning.
