Civil War–dated letter, one page, lightly-lined, 7.25 x 9.75, Castle Thunder, Richmond, Virginia, December 14, 1863. Letter to Governor Zebulon Baird Vance of North Carolina requesting a pardon. In part: “A number of your…Soldiers who has disobeyed the law by Being Absent from our Cos…was arrested, and are still under arrest and desire a reprieve from you so we can report to our Commands.” Reverse bears a note from Vance, in part: “If these men are not old offenders & did come on voluntarily, I hope they may be pardoned & sent to duty.” In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, and heavy show-through from docketing to reverse.
