Stuart document signed as 1st Cavalry Assistant Commissary of Subsistence in the service of the U.S. Dated 9 May, 1856, document predates Stuart's defection to the Confederacy, where he ultimately distinguished himself as a charismatic and highly effective cavalry general. Document written in a secretarial hand is a contract for provision of ''....fresh beef of a good and wholesome quality...'' on a regular basis ''...For the troops and employees...'' at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Signed ''J.E.B. Stuart''. Runs 2pp., front and verso on a single sheet of card-style stationery. Measures 7.75'' x 12.75''. Creasing, notations to verso and minor separation to crease along outer edge at center, else near fine.
