Confederate Second Type Richmond Musket, NVSN, .58 cal., 40'' three-banded barrel, small dovetail rear sight, high humpback 1862 dated sideplate marked ''C.S./Richmond, VA'', with correct high-arch 1855 style hammer, and U.S. marked steel buttplate. These earliest Confederate longarms were made with parts and machinery captured from Harper's Ferry Armory in April 1861 and moved to the Confederate facilities in Richmond. These early humpback lockplates were made from forging and dies taken at Harper's Ferry and originally intended for the Maynard Tape Primed 1855 rifled musket. In 1862 new dies were made shortening the hump. Condition is very good to near fine. Barrel and bands have toned dark with scattered moderate pitting near percussion nipple. Stock appears original and very lightly sanded at one point. Toning to triggerguard and buttplate with clean smooth bore. Ramrod is present. Cartouches are lightly visible. Action is crisp. Est.: $4,000-$6,000. (Antique)
