According to an accompanying frame enclosed letter of provenance, Eloise Walker (Wilder) knew Mary Sheridan, Philip's sister, from St. Mary's Seminary at Somerset, Ohio, in the mid 1840s. Eloise also knew Philip when he was a boy. Eloise and Mary stayed in touch over the years, and when Union General Sheridan made a visit to his father and sister in May 1865, Mary invited Eloise to come down for the celebration which St. Mary's held in his honor. It was on this occasion that Gen. Sheridan presented the Confederate bill to Eloise Walker Wilder.

We are offering this bill for its provenance from Robert E. Lee.

Frame is double sided. Front shows the signed note in center with images of Generals Lee and Sheridan at top, and an rendering printed image of Generals Lee and Grant signing the Confederate Army’s surrendering documents at the Appomatox Court House. Back side of the framed display shows the face side of the $10 CSA note and the letter of provenance. A beautiful display, unique and ready to present.
