The first sword-and-sorcery comic series is now being hailed as a classic. Exceptional art by Barry Smith started off the run, and John Buscema took over from there, doing perhaps the best work of his distinguished career (with Gil Kane contributing spectacular cover art more often than not). Writer Roy Thomas captured the essence of the character perfectly, adapted quite a few of Robert E. Howard's original stories along the way, and even created Red Sonja, who debuted in #23 and whose popularity came to approach that of Conan himself. The fact that Conan comics are now being published again to great acclaim means that even more collectors are seeking out Marvel's original series.
