Lot of 3 for the all important California and Con. Virginia mine pair that were the first and second largest producers on the Comstock Lode. Fair, Mackay, Flood, & O'Brien quietly bought up the stock to the Con. Virginia in the early 1870s. It turned out big for them with the Bonanza Discovery in 1873. 1) Ultra-rare Consolidated Virginia and California Joint Shaft – Agency of The Nevada Bank of San Francisco – Datelined Virginia City Feb. 5, 1878 and signed by James Fair. RN-G1 printed revenue stamp. This was the joint shaft to the Big Bonanza. Fair and Mackay owned the Nevada Bank of San Francisco, a rival to William Chapman Ralston's Bank of California; after the collapse of Ralston's financial empire in August of 1875, the Nevada Bank was for a time the largest bank in America at the height of the silver boom. Cut cancel and toning/soiling. 2) Two later checks: Consolidated California and Virginia Mining Co. (RN-X, 1899) and Con-Virginia Mining Co. (1911). Both Agency of the Bank of California. The combination of both mines before 1900 and after. Originally the Bonanza Mines. The earlier check was made out to the Virginia & Gold Hill Water Co., also owned by the Bonanza Kings.
