Choice examples of the Comstock Atlas and monograph published by the USGS, This was one of the first of the series for the newly created US Geologic Survey. George Becker was assigned the duty to perform this work, which was undertaken over approximately three years to publication. During the same period, the USGS assigned different geologists to map and analyze several other key mining districts in the US. Much politics surrounded the choices of what areas and topics would be covered by the USGS. It was considered essential in the development of ore deposit geology to get "a handle" on the geology of the large-producing ore deposits, particularly because so much investment capital went into these deposits, and so much "new money" was created when mined. But scientific interests were wide and far reaching, such that detailed studies were sought for many projects of little or no long term economic value , but of very high scientific value. Such is the case with the first study, the Grand Canyon (1882). The Comstock was second. Other key ore deposits followed, including Eureka, Nevada (1884, 1892), the copper at Lake Superior (1883), Leadville (1886), and so on. This Comstock Atlas and Monograph are in excellent condition, from the Robert Bennett Collection, longtime Goldfield region geologist. Date: Location: Virginia City, Nev., Nevada HWAC# 59816
