The helmet resembles a tournament helmet and has a 2-piece riveted skull with a rolled comb and a later added plume holder. On each side of the bevor is a hinged tab with a hole that fits over a post with a hole in it on the skull and a swiveling hook on the skull secures the tab. The visor was constructed of 1-piece and has a small weld on the tab in the center of the eye slits and a small weld on the very front tip. The ventail has a series of vent holes on the right side and is held in place with a post with a hole and a swiveling hook. There is a channel along the bottom of the helmet that fits over a roped edge flange on the gorget. The gorget, pauldrons and elbow cops all have a decorative cut pattern on the edges. The pauldrons are asymmetrical with the left larger than the right. There is a hole in the pauldrons and a spring loaded pin on the gorget to attach them. There are large neck guards on the pauldrons that are lined with red velvet. The late 16th century Italian peascod infantry breast plate has a small "46" engraved at the top center. The back plate has an "81" engraved at the top center. Mitten style gauntlets with bold roped edge. The well made contemporary multi-lamed tassets are plain. There is a plain cod piece. The coulet is held on with a leather belt. The late 16th century Italian munitions grade cuisses are very similar but not a pair with the left having 1 less lame above the winged knee cop. Plain sabatons with a closed toe box. Stands 6 feet tall x 30 inches wide x 21 inches deep without the 90 inch long decoratively etched ceremonial partizan. There is also a 22 1/2 inch diameter cast iron shield that is a copy of a parade shield located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It is decorated with the scene of the surrender of the elector of Saxony. There is a hanging bracket at the top center of the shield and a small circular stamp on the bottom rear. With a black painted base with painted shields measuring 17 1/2 inches tall x 20 inches wide x 17 3/4 inches deep. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection
