The later close helmet has rolled edge and welded construction. There are two horizontal vision slits in the visor. The ventail has a triangular series of holes on the left side and keyholes in a circle around a central hole on the right. The helmet has hook and post fasteners for the bevor and ventail. The pauldrons appear to be from the first half of the 17th century and have been reworked with a decorative scalloped edge with punch dot decoration on the lames. The late 16th century Italian breast plate has been modified for a reinforce. The back plate is not matching to the breast plate and is from southern Germany in the late 16th century. The gorget is stamped with three hearts over an anvil. The later detachable jousting exchange piece is welded and is held on by two screws and 1 hook and pin fastener. There is a later serrated lance rest on the right breast. The fully articulated finger gauntlets have a spurious Nuremburg guild stamp on the outside wrist areas. One cuff and metacarpal is late 16th century Italian. The tassets are a mixture of period pieces along with some later pieces. The greaves and sabatons are in the style of the 16th century. The knee cops are winged and there is a cod piece. Roped edges are present on most elements. The arm cannons and elbow cops are later elements. With a 36 1/2 inch long bladed hand and a half sword stamped with a small running wolf on the ricasso. Suit stands 66 inches tall x 28 inches wide x 20 inches deep and has a black painted wooden stand that is 10 inches tall x 18 inches wide x 18 inches deep. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection

Good, the helmet is missing a nut for the right pivot. There is scattered minor pitting overall with a few areas of moderate pitting and some areas of cracking/breakthroughs. Some of the brass on the rivets is still intact. There are some later elements that have been added to fill in the harness. The breast plate has replaced gussets, a replaced fauld and has been altered for the addition of the lance rest and jousting exchange piece. There are several different ages of leather.
