This style of armor was popular between 1500 and 1540. It was originally worn by Emperor Maximilian and was designed to imitate the clothing fashions of the time period. The close helmet with this example has a single comb with 4 "bellows" on the visor and a red feather plume at the rear. There is a spring loaded button to hold the visor closed and a second spring loaded button secures the ventail to the skull. The bevor has a groove around the bottom edge which clamps over a flange at the top of the gorget. The pauldrons have large neck guards and there is a hole which slides over a pin to secure them in place. There are winged elbow and knee cops. The helmet, mitten style gauntlets and Bear paw sabatons are attributed to Ernst Schmidt. There is a chain mail shirt underneath composed of punched flat rings and cut wire rings. The tassets are poorly made replacements attached with hinges. With a very large processional style Flamberge sword with a 48 inch long x 3 1/2 inch wide blade. The decorative parade style shield is late 19th century and measures 33 inches long x 24 1/2 inches wide. There is a repoussed face in the center with etched flutes radiating out to a 3 inch border around the outside edge etched with floral scroll and animals. On the backside of the shield "8-1922-24" is marked in red paint. The harness stands 74 inches tall x 24 inches wide x 28 inches deep. Stands on a nice walnut base measuring 22 inches tall x 26 inches wide x 28 inches deep. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection
