his is the only existing complete set of this most rare woodblock print series, Popular Themes of Traditional Puppet Theater, created in the late 1890?s by Japan's first artist to receive international acclaim and international prizes, Ogata Gekko (1859-1920). In fact, even individual prints from this series are just about impossible to find, so this is not only the only complete set, it contains the only surviving copy of many of the prints within the series of 12 prints. The last two times Inside Studios announced the availability of a complete set of work from the Gekko oeuvre, the items sold within days. (See the Inside Studios stock #103ae, Complete Collection of Japanese Antique Print Books by Gekko, and Inside Studios stock #103ja, The Only Complete Set, Outside of the Smithsonian, of Historical, Rare Gekko?s Artwork Series.) This is one of the last complete sets of Gekko work expected to be offered for sale. This offering is even more exceptional than the previous two, in that individual pieces of the previous sets can be found and collected to compile a complete set, whereas most of the individual prints from this series simply no longer exist.
