A complete series of 50 cards, each measuring 3.5 x 7 centimeters, "Merchant Ships of the World". These are small cards which were inside cigarette boxes, sold by the United Tobacco Company (South) Ltd. The backside of each card, giving information about the passenger ship concerned was copied and also framed (giving a unique opportunity to see both the front and back of the cards at the same time). This collection dates from the early 1920's as four former German ships which had tobe handed over to the USA and UK after World War I are included in the series. More modern ships which started to appear by 1925 are not included. Most recent ship in the series seems to be the "Paris" which entered service in 1921. Series was purchased in Cape Town, South Africa. The collection was magnificently framed - I am sorry that my photos of it do not do it justice.
Total size is 32 x 40 inches framed. It will be shipped framed to the buyer. Poster was part of a collection amassed over a lifetime by a Dutch diplomat. Please note that all of our posters, prints and pochoirs are original, vintage, non-reproduction pieces. Thank you.
