Complete Early-West Fringed Buckskin Outfit
COMPLETE EARLY-WEST FRINGED BUCKSKIN OUTFIT CIRCA 1860-70s Heavy pullover shirt top and trousers. Classic of the West - romantic garb which defined the Cavalry officer, scouts, trappers and Western adventurers. Made at the same time, in the same way, of the same materials as George Custer's outfits, one still to be seen at the Little Bighorn Museum. The only difference between his outfit and this, is this is a bit fancier - has more fringe and pockets. Words fail to adequately describe the character and style of this set. Matching over-shirt and trousers. Made from thick, puffy, probably Indian tanned elk hide, possibly buffalo. Shows use and a perfect patina, and is very excellent overall. Shirt has a wide lay-down collar, fringed entirely on edge and base. Lapels fringed. Shoulder and arm seams fringed. Five patch pockets on front fringed all around. Contoured bottom fringed. Backside fringed across the shoulders, down the center, and along the base. Two patch pockets on bottom rear, also fringed. Arms prox. 36". Chest prox. 46". Prox. 30" long. Trousers are wonderful on their own. Two patch pockets in front, fringed all around. Two in back the same. Belt in back with 1855 dated brass buckle. Fringed entirely down the outer seam of each leg. Prox. 36" waist, 33 1/2" inseam. All leather thick, puffy and heavy. Few suspender and fly brass buttons replaced or missing. Machine sewn, indicating this outfit likely came from a frontier outfitter. These outfits were available generally in frontier cities and at border trading posts, frequently made-to-order, often fabricated and sewn by Indian women employed for their skill at making these leather outfits. This was often the first purchase made by men coming off campaign or trappers returning to "civilization" to replace their blackened, greasy, shrunken, worn outfits. If your collection features the heritage of the early West, you could not find a more splendid icon.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
