Commodore Elliott Cigar Label- Naval Themed
Commodore Elliott Cigar Label. A naval-theme lithographed 7" x 6.5" inner label with gold-embossed highlights and trim. A portrait of Commodore Elliott is in the center of the label with naval battle scenes to each side with anchors, ropes, and swords as decorative borders. Jesse Duncan Elliott (1782-1845) was an American naval officer of great bravery and more than a just a little controversy. During the War of 1812, Elliott helped capture two British vessels on Lake Erie; he was made commander of the lake and awarded a sword by the government. He was second in command to Oliver Hazard Perry in the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie, and his actions in that battle started a controversy between the two men that would last their entire lives even to the point of Elliott challenging Perry to a duel. After a long career, Commodore Elliott was charged with some minor offences, and his trial by court martial in 1840 led to his suspension from duty for four years. This label is in very fine condition with some minor edge wear and light soiling at the top edge.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
