Comix Book #1 File Copy (Marvel, 1974) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white pages. Back in the mid-1970s, Underground Comix were everywhere. After years of lurking in the shadows, suddenly everyone was "hip" to counter-culture upstarts like Robert Crumb and his "Keep On Truckin'" images. Marvel was, by comparison, stuffy and conservative, but there was a time when they too were upstarts in the business, so Undergrounds must have appealed to Stan Lee & company. With the help of Denis Kitchen, Marvel quietly launched Comix Book, a quirky, Underground-style comics magazine featuring artists like Skip Williamson (Crumb, of course, would have nothing to do with the project). After five issues (none of which dared carry the Marvel logo on the cover; in fact the last two were published by Kitchen), it was all over. Here's a sharp file copy of that first issue, one of only three currently graded by CGC. Overstreet 2005 NM- 9.2 value = $28. CGC census 5/05: 2 in 9.4, none higher. From the collection of Apex Novelties founder Don Donahue.
