Joseph Comellas was born and raised in upstate New York. As a child growing up, he frequently visited the museums and galleries in New York City. This influenced Joseph at an early age as he began to study art, which became a life long pursuit.

At age 15, Joseph moved to Austin, Texas with his family. He continued studying and developing his art under the direction of Amado Pena, the well-known Southwestern Artist. At the age of 16, Joseph was selling his artwork professionally in galleries and at shows throughout the State of Texas. He attended Southwest Texas State University on a full paid Art Scholorship. The studios in the University were an artistic inspiration for Joseph where he began to develop and perfect his style.

In 1982, Joseph moved to Sante Fe, New Mexico. He chose Santa Fe because it had left such an impact on him several years earlier during a visit with Amado Pena. He continued to further his art education, attending classes to hone his skill. He also became interested in philosophy, religin and literature.

By the mid '80's, Joseph regularly sold his work at the Cathedral Park Art Shows in Santa Fe where he first really developed his collector's interest in his work. He is a member of the Santa Fe Society of Artists and shows with his group of close friends regularly. Additionally, his works can be found in the most prominent galleries in the South West.

The Santa Fe landscape with all it's sensual shapes, organic forms and dramatic lighting defines the paintings by Joseph Comellas. These paintings depict the mountains, mesas, buttes, arroyos and rivers of his location that he is proud to call home. Comellas symbolizes abundance, prosperity and well being in his paintings.

These paintings encourage the exploration of human emotions expressed within the features of the beautiful scenery of the South West as seen through the artist's eyes. These are philosophical sketches into the soul. What is seemingly simple in appearance is often deeper with emotion. The sensual contours of the land combined with vibrant, powerful colors convey a different beauty of something we may take for granted.
