In 1831, Mexico gifted the colonists of Gonzales with a cannon so they could defend themselves against Comanche raids. In 1935, Mexico's political situation had deteriorated and they asked for the cannon to be returned. At the Battle of Gonzales, the first battle of the Texas Revolution, a small group of Texans resisted the Mexicans while flying a flag fashioned out of a wedding dress bearing the words 'Come and Take It'.
