The lot features a nice 19th Century Southern Plains Comanche Native American Indian drum. The war or dance drum, which dates to circa Pre-1890's is from the Comanche people and shows a wetted and stretched Buffalo hide over a bent wood frame secured with thick sinew rawhide sewing. The entire surface of the parfleche rawhide shows mineral pigment paint with the front showing an old blue coloring with symbols in a reverse relief of a half moon and three five-pointed stars. The back side of the drum shows an early pigment mineral yellow paint along with five five-pointed stars painted in blue and a center area where the drum was likely pounded and worn from use. Similar half-moon and five-point star painted motifs in blue and yellow coloring have been documented on early Comanche war shirts, shields, and drums along with other accouterments. The drum appears to be in well preserved good condition. Provenance: From a large American Indian weapons and artifacts collection, the very same as the collection that sold the Wounded Knee Memorial Drum in our 7/13/2019 sale for $17,500. Measures overall 13 inches diameter across and 3 ½ inches thick.
