Comanche Beaded Bow & Arrow Hide Quiver c. 1800's
This is an outstanding and exceptionally artful authentic Southern Plains Native American Indian bow and arrow quiver set dating to the 19th Century from the Comanche tribe. The piece shows a bow and arrow quiver along with the matching long bow and two complete arrows all being authentic originals dating to the Indian Wars era of the 19th Century (1800’s). The bow and arrow quiver are constructed of Indian brain tanned Buffalo Bison hide and have gorgeous beaded sections along with long hand cut Indian tanned hide fringe drops. The beadwork is all period correct 1800’s glass trade seed cen beads in a traditional geometric showing a greasy blue background with greasy yellow, cobalt, Cheyenne pink and red colors. The beadwork is shown encompassing the circumference at the ends of each quiver, shown at four spots. The original wide Indian tanned hide shoulder strap is still intact and shows a nice patina likely from being worn. The piece would have been used during hunting parties and possibly during war parties and shows a nice patina from being on horseback and meeting the ground. The entire quiver hide area is beautifully covered in natural mineral pigment of yellow ocher and overall has a nice mellow patina from authentic use. The bow shows a carved wood example with sinew stomach parfleche braided string and rawhide parfleche wraps and is accompanied by two arrows showing old turkey feather fletching being sinew wrapped and iron point arrowheads. This is truly an exceptionally rare offering with tremendous visual appeal and a fine American Indian artifact. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Cyrus Eaton’s Estate from London, England. The bow measures 44 inches in length and the arrows are both 31 inches in length. The bow case and quiver measures roughly 41 inches wide end to end.
