Columbian Exposition Satsuma Pitcher
Columbian Exposition Satsuma Pitcher. Traditionally an isolationist kingdom, Japan had entered the modern world by the late 19th century and was an eager participant in Chicago's Columbian Exposition of 1892-93. This exquisite Satsuma one-handled pitcher was made in Japan for sale in America as a souvenir of the exposition. One side shows Machinery Hall while the other has the expo's Japanese building. As is typical of Satsuma, this pitcher has gilt highlights and a creme outer glaze. Signed in Japanese on the base in a blue underglaze. A hairline to the underside and a small amount of wear to the gilt on the handle, else very fine condition. 7.25" high.
