Butte, Montana. 24,990 Shares Capital Stock Issued Certificate, Black print and gold print on black border with orange under tint, Low serial number -#7, Men working in mine at top, VF-XF condition. Certificate is signed by Louis P. Best as secretary and Leopald K. Schmidt as president. Louis P. Best was born in 1848 in present-day Osthofen, Germany, and was educated in Stuttgart and Berlin. He came to the United States in 1869 and worked as a chemist in New York City. He moved to Davenport in 1874 to work for the Davenport Glucose Manufacturing Company. He eventually bought stock in the company to the point that he became one of their chief stockholders and became involved in the management of the company. He also had other business interests in the city including Davenport Machinery & Foundry Company, of which he was president, the Bettendorf Axle Company, Hawkeye Electric Company, and Citizens National Bank. He later founded a glucose factory in Granite City, Illinois, and in 1908 built the Best Building in Rock Island, Illinois for a department store for which he served as one of the directors. In addition to his business interests, he was a member of the local school board. There is also a local legend that Best invented the process that is used to make Argo cornstarch. Leopold Schmidt owned the Centennial Brewery in Butte, Montana. After moving to Tumwater he started the Capital Brewing Company, which later became the Olympia Brewing Company and was eventually purchased by Pabst Brewing Company in 1999.
