Columbia,CA - Tuolumne County - c1901 - Densmore Mine Photograph :
A view of nine miners taking a break from work at the Densmore Mine. Measuring 8 x 4 3/4" with a beige cardstock backing measuring 10 x 7". Sharp focus with medium contrast. The cardstock cover has separated from its backing in the upper right corner and on the right edge. The image is very fine, other than 4-5 small spots on the bottom and right edge. The photographer is "Wm. Wax," from the "Universal Art Studio." Wax was active in Diamond Springs in 1893; operated the El Dorado Gallery in Redding in 1890; partner in Wax & Tonge, Universal Art Studio in 1898; and in El Dorado and Big Canon Mine in 1899. "Densmore Mine, see pg 53, 1901, County brochure" handwritten in pencil on the reverse. The miners pictured, two of whom are standing with shovels next to an ore cart, all appear to be taking a break from their work to be photographed. A wooden structure can be seen in the left of the picture, bordering on their work area. This mine is near the town of Columbia, once known as "the gem of the Southern Mines." The name appears on Gibbs Map of the Southern Mines in 1852, as well as on Dart's Map of the principal Quartz and Gravel Mines in Tuolumne County in 1879 (Ref: CA Gold Camps, Gudde).
