Columbia,CA - Tuolumne County - August 1852 - Tuolumne County Water Company Receipts :
Lot of two receipts, printed on light blue paper, measuring 3 x 5." Each is made out to Webb and signed by Collector Bowen. With the discovery of gold in Tuolumne county in 1848, and subsequent mining areas and camps that came into being, there was a clear need for a steady water supply. This was the first water company formed in the county in 1852, in response to that need. The water came from the South Fork of the Stanislaus River. Within 2 years the Columbia and Stanislaus River Company was founded as competition, taking its water from the Main Fork of the Stanislaus River. It was organized because of the exorbitant rates the Tuolumne County Water Co. Was charging. In the late 1800s water disputes were very common and they sometimes led to fighting and even murder [Ref: www.tchistory.org/TCHISTORY/Wonders_14.htm].
