Colt model 1911, .45 ACP caliber, semiautomatic pistol, blued finish, diamond checkered wood grips, serial number ā€œ125578ā€. Letter from noted expert and author of US Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920 Scott Meadows states that this Colt was sent from Colt firearms to Springfield Armory in June of 1912 in order to facilitate manufacture of the model 1911 at a national armory. He further states that the pistols were not military inspected and were serial numbered 125567 through 125586. He further documents that the finish is not a Colt finish but a military-type finish applied at the arsenal when serial number was struck. He further states the serial numbers are of the Springfield size and style, the slide stop is of Springfield manufacture and is ā€œSā€ marked, the hammer is of the 1914 type and replaced. He concludes that this is a scarce and interesting variation that deviates from the norm due to modifications accomplished at the Springfield arsenal. The pistol shows approx. 90-95% arsenal-type blue finish that is pasty and of the type found on Springfields. There are some slight losses at the high points and edges, the grips are very good plus, the markings sharp, the edges crisp. The interior is very good plus with bright bore. A two-tone lanyard-bottom magazine is included. Est: $6,000 - $12,000
