Colt model 1855 sporting rifle, .56 caliber, five-shot cylinder, 24” barrel, with full-length forstock, three-leaf rear sights, serial number 381. The rifle remains in original very good condition showing 60-80% original blue, evenly thinning and toning with some drifting to patina. The cylinder and frame shows some areas of light to moderate erosion and pitting. The varnish wood stocks are very good plus to near fine with just a couple of minor bumps and bruises. The rifle is stamped Colt’s Patent on the front of the tang with no other patent marks or ID’s. The hammer shows 50% toning case hardening. The original ramrod is retained. The sights are original and the barrel bands show blue. The action is tight, the interior is very good. A scarce combination of caliber, barrel length, and stocking which is seldom encountered. With original inventory sheet from the Charles DuPont collection indicating purchase in 1979 from Gene DuPont Jr., his cousin. Est: $7,000 - $14,000
