Colt model 1855 Root Musket U.S. Military marked and cartouched, serial #220, the only rifle specimen known to collectors in .50 caliber. Formerly Charles DuPont Collection. The rifle shows 30%-50% original blue toningto patina with some scattered light to moderate rust and erosion. The markings are good. There are some dents and dings on edges and cylinder consistent with military use and storage. The folding leafs on rear sightare missing but center site and base retained. The stocks are very good plus with a couple of dings, mars and normal use with visible cartouche on right wrist. The action is good, the bore is fair to good with somewear to the rifling. Original ram rod is retained. Martially marked Roots are very scarce and several references mention .50 caliber examples but authors had never viewed one. Possibly the rarest Martial Colt longarm from the Civil War. Est.; $15,000-$30,000
