Colt model 1855 Root, .75 caliber shotgun, with 27” barrel in very good plus to near fine condition, serial #32. The largest caliber made in the Root series and this is one of the lowest numbers known in the .75 caliber of which only approx. 600 were produced. The gun remains in original very good condition with approx. 50-70% original blue overall, some drifting to patina, with light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting, mostly confined to firing areas of cylinder and frame. The edges are crisp, markings in groove are sharp, and patent date fully legible on cylinder. The stocks are of slightly better quality showing a slight burlwood grain and stocks remain in very good condition with approx. 75-85% varnish, some staining from oil dripping and minor nicks and mars. Generally very good overall. Colt’s patent marking on left of frame is fully legible. Action is good, interior is good. Brass-tipped ramrod of correct type is included. Inventory sheet from the Charles DuPont collection indicates purchase from Colt dealer Greg Martin, 1979. Est: $4,000 - $8,000
