Colt model 1855 Root, 3A variation, 3-1/2” octagon barrel, Hartford address, .31 caliber, full fluted cylinder, serial #1073. The Root remains in original good to very good condition with 50-70% original blue drifting on the frame and cylinder. Areas where finish has lifted going to a pleasing brown patina. Some scattered erosion and pinprick pitting, minor dings, scratches, etc. The hammer and loading lever show 20-30% case hardening, the varnish wood grips are very good with 75-85% varnish, some wear at the edges, minor marks, a couple of mars, one small gouge at the edge, and a couple of scratches. The action is tight, the interior is bright. The hammer is occasionally not holding on full cock. Refer Flayderman 5B-067. The pistol is contained within an original to the period Colt case which has been nicely relined in red velveteen of the correct type, just slightly misshaped partitions. The .31 caliber iron mould is somewhat rough. The colt’s patent eagle flask is good with traces of laquer. A cap tin is retained. The exterior of the box is good with some warping and loosening at the joints. Small cracks, but generally very good overall. A scarce variation of which only approx. 1,350 were made.
