Colt model 1851 Navy revolver, .36 caliber percussion, 7-1/2” octagon barrel, patina finish, wood grips, serial #152118. With letter stating that this pistol was obtained from Grace Holloway of Townsend, MT, widow of Floyd Holloway, who acquired the pistol from Charles Kanause, also Townsend, MT. Charles was the son of J. E. Kanause, and J. E. operated a freight business in the 1860’s and 70’s on the Bozeman trail. J. E. stated that it came from the Custer Battlefield. Letter signed by Don M. Rees, Sydney, MT. Not dated, but approx. early 1980’s. Some subsequent research on the Kanause names and Holloway names identify them to the Montana area. Thepistol is well known among collectors. The navy shows a grey to brown patina finish, some light to slightly heavy pitting and erosion. The front sight has been period changed to a larger blade type for bettershooting. Each top of grip is carved with the letter “H”. The butt is scratch inscribed “F. L. H.” The action needs minor adjustment. All matching visible serial numbers. An interesting navy with a bit of documentation
