Colt model 1849 pocket model, .31 caliber percussion, 4” barrel, fully and finely Gustav Young engraved. Blue and case hardened finish, burl wood grips, cased with accessories. Serial number “180724”. The revolver remains in original very good condition showing 40-60% original blue starting to dull and tone on the barrel with some light erosion and pinprick pitting just starting, mostly at the muzzle. The Colt shows a two-line Hartford address and is a five-shot. The edges on the barrel are crisp, the markings sharp, and the pistol is fitted with a blade and post German silver front sight, which is of the period. The cylinder shows approx. 90% plus original cylinder scene with well-defined figures. The cylinder shows traces of blue, mostly drifted to light brownish grey, with some minor erosion and pinprick pitting developing at the firing areas. The frame, hammer, and loading lever show faint traces of case hardening, gone to a silvery grey patina with smoky colors mixed in. The backstrap and triggerguard show 80-90% uncleaned and dulling original silver plate. The deluxe varnish wood grips are very good plus with just slight marks and minor aging. All matching visible serial numbers. Some bright blue in protected areas, particularly under the ramrod. The quality of the engraving is exceptional and shows cobwebs, hand-cut Colt’s patent on frame, florals, and typical Young-type “parrot-eagle” on the left side of the barrel lug. The pistol is contained with its original to the period burgundy-colored velvetine-lined partition style case. The case is in very good plus to near fine condition with just minor fraying, wear at contact points, and slight aging. An eagle flask in good condition is included that has a couple of dents and has been lightly cleaned. A brass mold in pocket in good condition. A brass replacement key. The exterior of the case is good to very good, showing some minor scratches, the number “182” lightly carved into the top of the lid, some minor cleaning, but generally good to very good overall with its original keyplate. Inventory sheet from the Charles DuPont collection indicates purchase from Eugene DuPont Jr., 1979. Est: $5,000 - $10,000
