Colt model 1849 London pocket model, .31 caliber percussion, 5” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, varnish wood grips, deluxe London cased and inscribed on backstrap “H. Lt C. Hammill R.N.” (Royal Navy) Serial #5828. The pistol is contained within its original deluxe brass-mounted mahogany case with extra fancy hardware and carrying ring. The carrying ring is inscribed in period script matching the engraving on the backstrap and also the plaque in lid inscribed “R. N.” The pistol remains in original very good plus condition showing 30-50% original blue on barrel, evenly drifting and toning with some light erosion and pinprick pitting just starting. The edges are sharp, the markings crisp, the metal surfaces are generally smooth with no nicks around the wedge or barrel lugs, just a minimal amount of aging. The cylinder shows 75-85% cylinder scene going slightly light with some small areas of pitting and erosion and cylinder has gone to a light grey brown patina. The frame shows 40-60% case hardening as does the hammer and lever with considerable colors going to light grey. The backstrap and triggerguard show 75-85% thick original silver plate, areas where silver has lifted have gone to a dark patina on the backstrap and triggerguard. The varnish wood grips are very good plus with 75-85% varnish, some wear at the edges, minor dings, mars, etc. All matching visible serial numbers, British proofs, tight action, fine interior. The pocket is contained within its original to the period green partition-style deluxe case showing instruction label in lid with full accessories. The interior of the case shows some slight fraying, minor losses, normal aging but is at least very good plus overall to near fine. An original cleaning rod with broken tip, compartment cover, “Colt’s Pocket” marked bag flask by James Dixon with 80-90% lacquer, bullet mold with 75-85% original blue, nipple wrench with 50% original blue 250ct cap tin with full label in good condition, and the instruction label is mostly legible with some slight staining, losses, normal aging, but is definitely original to the case. The exterior of the case is in near fine condition and as mentioned, extremely deluxe just showing minor stress cracks and small storage marks. A very deluxe and interesting set that is rare with the dual inscription and this is the type box found with the highest quality English Colts. The identity of Lt. Hammill should provide interesting research. Est: $7,000 - $14,000
