Colt U.S. Model 1863 Muzzle Loading Percussion Musket, #NVSN, .58 cal., 40" barrel, metal is "in the white", walnut stock, blade front sight, and "V"-notch rear sight. The lockplate is marked "U.S./COLT'S PT F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD CT" and "1863". Hammer screw was replaced with a smaller diameter screw. Barrel is marked "1863" on top with "VP (eagle) WB STEEL" on the left; eagle on the bolster is crisp. Upper and middle bands are marked "U" & "L" and the lower band is marked "U" & "M". Front sight blade and base were damaged by filing. Ramrod is a model 1855 with a swell. Finish was cleaned to white and is fine overall, except the trigger assembly is pitted, back of the barrel has light pitting at the nipple, and there is a spot of rust on the hammer. Stock has two unreadable cartouches on the left side, and is in fine condition, but has a damaged area on the right in front of the middle band. Action works properly. Bore has good rifling but there is a 4" area of rust near the muzzle, which may clean better. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)
