Colt U.S. Cavalry SAA revolver, .45 cal., 7-1/2” barrel, nickel finish, raised carved Mexican snake and eagle ivory grips, #7141. This gun is in overall very good to excellent condition showing approx. 85% old nickel finish applied over the original military blue and case hardened finish and opined to have been done at the time the old beautifully accomplished and worn Mexican carved ivory grips were added, replacing the original inspected wood grips; all matching visible serial numbers. The bore is good, the markings are sharp including the “A” and “P” inspection/proof on the underside of the barrel, the italicized barrel address and the two line frame patent dates with “U.S” stamping. Accompanying this revolver is a Xerox copy of a letter from noted Colt authority John A. Kopec, indicating his review of the weapon and his opinion that the gun “is totally authentic in every respect” and that it was likely “liberated” from the U.S. 5th Cavalry along the border and taken into Old Mexico where it was nickel plated and contemporaneously fitted with magnificent carved Mexican snake and eagle ivory grips. Kopec further identifies several other Cavalry Model SAAs he has referenced, close in number to this gun that had been with the 5th in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. This is a truly unique and desirable Colt that was manufactured in 1874 and saw service in the West. Est.: $17,500-$35,000.
