Colt U.S. Artillery Model SAA revolver, .45 cal., 5-1/2” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, wood grips, #8587 on the frame, #119233 on the trigger guard, #47931 on the back strap, #9 _7 on the cylinder and #6505 on the barrel. The gun is in overall very good to fine condition showing approx. 90% original re-finish as directed by the US Ordinance Dept. on the barrel assembly, cylinder, back strap and trigger guard and approx. 35% of the re-done case colors when re-furbished and converted to an Artillery length handgun (balance of frame and hammer gone to a pleasing silvery tone); the bore is very good to excellent, crisp action, sharp markings, fine grips with sharp inspector cartouches on each side and the date “1901” on the left grip. This important Artillery Model Colt SAA has been evaluated by Colt Single Action Army authority John A. Kopec. In his three page letter, dated June 30, 2005, Mr. Kopec notes this gun was returned twice for re-furbishing with the last time being in preparation for the Philippine Insurrection. He further states the barrel number is 54 numbers off a documented serial number SAA that was “rendered unserviceable” at the Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876. He concludes his letter by stating “It is my opinion that this revolver is 100% authentic in every respect, and truly a “sight to behold”. The finish remains in near perfect condition, showing most of its original (as arsenal refinished ) blue, while good traces of its case-coloring remain.”. Est.: $7,000-$14,000.
