Colt Third Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver

Manufactured in 1858. This is an example a civilian Third Model Dragoon. This revolver has the round brass trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops found on Third Model Dragoons. The top flat barrel marking is absent and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT". The left trigger guard shoulder is marked with a small "M". The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Indians and Federals battle scene and marked "MODEL U.S.M.R./COLTS PATENT". The complete matching serial number is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, cylinder and back strap, and the partial serial number "7812" is marked on the loading lever, wedge and arbor pin. Four screw frame with recoil shields and back strap cut for a shoulder stock. Standard brass blade front sight and two folding leaf rear sight (both leafs frozen in the down position) and fitted with smooth one-piece walnut grip.

Fair. The barrel has been period shortened to 6 1/2 inches. The cylinder is a replacement and has been reroll-engraved and marked with most of the scene visible. The metal surfaces have a mottled brown and gray patina with some scattered minor oxidation. The trigger guard has an aged patina with strong age darkened silver plating in protected areas. The grip is good with a small chip on each toe, wear on the lower edges, and a few minor handling marks. Unless noted above, the markings are clear. The action is fine.
