Colt Texas Model Paterson, .34 cal., 4-5/8” barrel, traces of original blue and case hardened finish, wood grips, #979. This Paterson is pictured in the 1934 publication “The Folding Trigger Paterson Colt” by William G. Renewick, figure 12, page 10 where it is shown with a belt model-type barrel address that was hand-engraved and which was incorrect and added by a collector sometime prior to 1934. It is this expert’s opinion that this Paterson was originally a two-barrel set and that this short extra barrel was not addressed by the factory; at least two bulldog (short-barreled) Paterson barrels are known with no address. The incorrect barrel address was professionally removed on this Paterson by a well-known collector upon the advice of several well- known Paterson experts including this cataloger. The Paterson remains in original good to very good condition showing a light grey patina finish with faint traces of case hardening and blue finish mixed in; there is some scattered light to moderate erosion and pin prick pitting mostly on the top of the barrel and a few areas on the straps (nothing serious). The removal of the address and re-coloring in this area is perfectly accomplished and shows no evidence of having been present. The cylinder shows 75%-85% original cylinder scene, a couple areas of pitting and erosion but generally exceptional with the word “Colt” well-defined. The back of the cylinder shows two cylinder pins added, probably by the factory, of Walker size. The frame and hammer are fairly crisp and show considerable traces of case hardening in the right light. The grips are good to very good with just some slight darkening, minor wear and a small chip from the right front toe. All matching serial numbers except wedge which is numbered “978” and is only one number off. The action is hesitating and sticking occasionally and needs adjustment. The condition is good to very good overall and an above-average example of a Texas Paterson Colt. Provenance and published history begins in 1934 with William Renewick to Theodore Dexter sales list, the Hines Collection #239; Texas Collector Carl Metzger, 1940; Fred Carnes, 1940s; William Dykes, 1994 (from the estate of Fred Carnes); to the estate of Richard Wolfe. Numerous copies of correspondence and letters concerning this pistol are also included, some from well-known collectors such as Phil Phillips, noted dealer James Serven, legendary collector John Parsons, James Heslin, Director of the New York Historical Society along with copy of certificate from Texas Gun Collectors Parade of Patersons, 1994 where this pistol was exhibited and authenticated. This cataloger and collector of Texas Patersons has owned over half the known examples and would rate this specimen slightly above average with the rare bulldog length barrel and great provenance.
