Colt Single Action U. S. Issue .45 Colt cal., arsenal returned for re-issue in Spanish American War era, with 5-1/2" barrel, blue and case hardened finish, frame number 8072. A documenting letter from John A. Kopec,co-author "Calvary and Artillery Revolvers" states "this serial number 8072 is listed in the National Archives Records as belonging to Battery A, Wyoming Artillery during 1899". Kopec recants that Calvary revolvers thathad served on the western frontier were returned to the Springfield Armory and re-issued for the Spanish American War, and Mr. Kopec states " the subject revolver was altered at the Springfield Armory in 1898".He further states "the trigger guard shows number 385, and sub-inspection by Ainsworth in the range of the 6th Cavalry with a double hit to the 8th stamp". The backstrap shows number 120957 and this number was fitted to a Calvary revolver that has served with the Railway Mail Service; which these revolvers were returned to the arsenal November 11, 1890, refer "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver", page 566.
