Colt Single Action Army revolver in .38 special caliber, 5 ½” barrel, finely custom engraved by Cole Agee, re-nickeled finish, carved steer head grips with jeweled eyes and documenting letter by Jink Howard and photograph of him holding this pistol in his left hand. Jink Howard authored the book “Cole Agee Texas Engraver” and was considered the foremost expert on his work. Also a factory letter is included which documents original caliber as .38-40, originally shipped blued with grips not listed to E.L. Wilson Hardware Company, Beaumont, Texas July 31, 1901 with 6 guns in shipment, serial number 212542. Cole Agee is somewhat of a legend with Colt single action collectors and he engraved from the 1920s until about 1955. Agee engraved for John Wayne, Bill Ruger, John Amber, Gene Autry, Texas Rangers and celebrities throughout the world. Of course him being a Texan most of them reside in collections located in the Lone Star State. This pistol remains in fine to near excellent condition as refinished at time of engraving with just some slight use since. The action is good, the bore is bright, the patent dates are legible and the revolver shows a 1947 to 1955 factory replacement barrel and cylinder in .38 special with side address. The grips are of the type attributed to Wolf and Klar in Fort Worth and remain in very good to near fine condition. The lot includes a copy of Jink Howard’s book.
