Colt Single Action Army revolver, US Artillery series, .45 caliber, 5-1/2” barrel, blue and case hardened, wood grips, with scarce 4th Cavalry markings, frame #2956. Illustrated Colt Cavalry and ArtilleryRevolvers by Kopec, page 16, illustration 1-3. Right side of frame is originally marked “Co K 4 CAV”. According to Kopec there are 15 revolvers surveyed with these type of markings and were sent to the San AntonioArsenal, Jan. 15th, 1874 and were used in early Indian fights on the Texas frontier. The revolver remains in very good plus original condition with 20-40% original blue finish, some very bright areas of rainbowcase hardening and bright blue where protected. There is some very light scattered erosion and pinprick pitting just starting. The markings are sharp, the edges are crisp, the grips are good to very good with a “DFC”inspection on bottom of right grip. The triggerguard is numb ered 8387 with Ainsworth inspection. The backstrap is numbered 54993. The cylinder is “HN” inspected with “P” proof. The barrel shows a “J” and “P” proof.
