Colt Single Action Army revolver, .45 caliber, 5-1/2” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, cartouche wood grips, frame #5741, in Custer range. Refer Colt Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers by Kopec and Fenn,illustration 30-6, where it is discussed and described as a possible Custer Colt in 7th Cav series. Backstrap and triggerguard are found on two other known artilleries (frame numbers 2787 and 48729). The barrel showsapprox. 85-95% original military blued finish, drifting on the left edge and muzzle from holstering. There is some minor erosion, beginning aging, where the finish has lifted. The front sight is its full height,correct feathering or polishing, and most of its original blue. The ejector rod housing shows 50-60% blue mostly in the groove, drifting on its edge, some nicks, mars, and small losses. The cylinder shows 50-60%original blue evenly thinning and toning with just normal aging. The frame shows 40-0% darkening case hardening with considerable case hardening that is going slightly dark. The hammer shows 40-50% dulling case
